What is the IMCA Service?

The IMCA service is a statutory advocacy service introduced by the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
Its aim is to support and represent individuals who lack capacity to make specific decision at a specific time.

Who is the IMCA Service for?

Any individual over the age of 16 years who lacks capacity and has no appropriate friend or family member; no person they have already nominated to be consulted; a lasting power of attorney; or a welfare deputy appointed by the court.

What does an IMCA do?

An IMCA determines how best to represent and support the individual who lacks capacity. An IMCA;


Who can refer?

Referrals to the IMCA Service will be received directly from either the local authority or NHS body, therefore health and social care professionals can refer.

When you MUST refer to the IMCA Service?

If the individual is facing a decision about;
where the criteria is met there is a statutory duty to refer to the service.

When you CAN refer to the IMCA Service?

You can also refer to the IMCA Service if the individual meets the criteria and is involved in;

The IMCA Service normally operates between the hours of 9am – 5pm Monday – Friday.
An out of hours answer service is available to leave your name and contact details.
