TV Agony Aunt Opens Healthy Ageing Conference

TV Agony Aunt, Denise Robertson, will be making a special appearance to open a conference at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland at 9.30am on Wednesday 31st October 2007.

The conference is the culmination of the first ‘Celebrating Age’ month to be held in Sunderland which ran throughout October to value the contribution to the city of the 50+ age group.

The Older People’s Partnership Group (OPPAG) has organised the conference on the theme of Healthy Ageing and Age Friendly Cities. Dr Louise Plouffe of the World Health Organisation (WHO) is travelling from Geneva to outline the recently published WHO guidelines as to what makes an Age Friendly City.

Delegates from across the region including many local authorities and around 40 older people will be attending the conference.

Alan Patchett, Chair of the OPPAG says, “This conference is an ideal opportunity to raise the issue of healthy ageing to ensure those aged 50+ can stay fit, active and independent for longer. It would be brilliant if Sunderland was to become one of the first ‘Age Friendly’ cities in the world”.

Cllr Eric Timmins, Portfolio Holder for Adult Services, of Sunderland City Council says, The council is already working to meet the increasing demands on services as a result of having an ageing population.  We very much value the contribution that older people make to our social and economic structures and we want to create a city that provides them with the opportunities for a high quality of life.”

The conference will also be addressed by Professor Geoff Green of Sheffield Hallam University who will present a profile of older people in Sunderland, Professor Jim Edwardson from the Newcastle Institute of Ageing and Health and Victoria French, Sunderland Council Wellness Manager.

Note to Editors:

There are now more elderly people in Sunderland with the number of over 65s rising from 38,700 in 1981 to 45,800 in 2005.  It is projected by 2025 there will be 59,500 over 65s and the number of people aged over 85 will have expanded three fold to 7,600.

Research shows that any amount of physical activity at any age can have the effect of increasing life expectancy.
